After more than a decade of focusing on diesel locomotives, Germany began a comprehensive rail electrification program in 1978. The GDR's sole electric locomotive manufacturer was commissioned in 1978 to develop a lighter, more technologically advanced four-axle locomotive based on the proven 250 Series heavy freight locomotive for passenger and medium-duty freight train service. This new locomotive would replace the 211 Series express trains and the 242 Series freight trains, with no operational restrictions. The 212 001 prototype locomotive made its debut at the 1982 Leipzig Spring Fair. Its aesthetically pleasing white with red stripes attracted considerable attention, earning it the nickname "White Lady" from visitors. The BR 212/243 series electric locomotives were awarded the "Good Design Award" at the Spring Fair for their design.
